He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.”
― Friedrich Nietzsche
Some time ago, I read a most interesting book by Simon Sinek titled Start With Why. Bet you’ve read it too. If you haven’t, you should.
The basic premise is that your WHY is your purpose in life. It is what inspiresyou. Or SHOULD inspire you.
Can you imagine a life without inspiration? Living in a grey world where nothing turns you on? No jazz? No pizzazz?
Well, I can’t. But I run across many people, every day, who live that way. Actually, I take it back. They don’t LIVE. They merely EXIST.
I consider myself blessed. I found my WHY. And it is WHITE HOT.
As a LEADER, I can create a WHY to inspire my group. To define us and give meaning to our existence. To guide our decisions and actions.
You see, a WHY serves multiple purposes.
Personally, my WHY inspires me every day. Drives me where I need to go. Fuels me when my tank is dry. Wakes me up each morning raring to go. 5 AM, rain or shine.
You can read all about how Simon says your WHY “gives you a filter to make choices, at work and at home, that will help you find greater fulfillment in all that you do” in his book. Or listen to his TED talk.
He says it much better than I could.
All I know is, finding it, establishing that WHY, is what has kept me from living a life of drudgery and mediocrity.
“For as long as there’s anyone to ask ‘Why?’ the answer will always be, ‘Why not?”
― Vera Nazarian
So how do you find your White Hot Why?
Answer the Following Questions:
- What matters most to you in life?
- What moves you?
- What stirs your soul?
- What do you feel really passionate about?
- What activities bring you the most fulfillment?
- What gets you up and out of bed every morning?
- What inspires you to put yourself out there every day?
You will find your WHY in the answers to these questions.
“It is not what we choose that is important; it is the reason we choose it.”
